The band

We are The Camera Eye, a power trio that celebrates the passion, poetry, and precision of the band Rush. Their music shaped who we are as musicians and as people; we formed this band to honor that influence with high-energy, musically precise performances. Our mission is to recreate the spirit of Rush faithfully and passionately, while sharing the joy that made us fans in the first place. Rush built entire worlds in their songs, and with their brilliant combination of humor and philosophy they continue to captivate generations of listeners. We aim to capture that same essence that makes Rush so impactful. Charlotte, North Carolina is where we call home but we are excitedly embarking on a mission to bring Rush’s music to stages across the US!

Payton Rose Velligan

Bass/Vocals/Keyboards

Payton Rose is a multi-instrumentalist whose connection to Rush began in high school, where she learned to play bass by working her way through the band’s catalog. What started as a challenge quickly became a passion, shaping her musicianship and deepening her appreciation for the complexity and creativity that define Rush’s sound. Inspired by Geddy Lee’s multi-layered performances, Payton programs all of the band’s keyboard sounds herself and covers foot-pedal parts live onstage, helping recreate the atmospheric textures and signature details that Rush fans know and love. Outside of The Camera Eye, Payton tours as a guitarist and vocalist for “Weird Al” Yankovic and will be re-joining him in summer of 2026 for the second leg of the “Bigger and Weirder” tour. No matter what stage she is on, Payton brings a dynamic blend of love, energy, and authenticity to every show.

James Nelson

Guitar

James Nelson is a seasoned veteran of the progressive music scene. Through his work with Nospūn and The Reticent, James has toured the world as part of the new generation of prog musicians carrying the torch of those who came before. For James, this all began when he first heard Rush in his pre-teen years. From the moment he heard Alex Lifeson soar on his guitar, his passion for prog rock began. The Camera Eye is his opportunity to pay tribute and capture the essence of not only Rush as a whole, but to Alex Lifeson’s aggressive style that shaped James’ early development as a guitarist.

Matthew Hedrick

Drums/Percussion

Matthew Hedrick discovered drums and Rush at the same time as a young teenager in the 80s and has spent the better part of a lifetime studying the meticulously crafted drum parts of Neil Peart. The Camera Eye is the culmination of a lifelong dream to present these songs as note-for-note as possible, while sharing his love of this music with bandmates and fans alike. Matthew’s other endeavors include touring North America with acclaimed tribute band Abacab – The Music of Genesis alongside bandmate James Nelson, as well as various original music projects. Matthew’s passion is Prog For Wishes, an organization he founded to leverage Progressive Rock concerts by Charlotte's greatest musicians for the benefit of Make-A-Wish®. You can read more about this and his Blog at ProgForWishes.org.
